Traffic accident injuries and deaths due to poor visibility

As a driver, it is essential to have a clear understanding of traffic accident hazards whenever you get behind the wheel. Sometimes, drivers cannot anticipate certain risks, such as encountering a drunk, distracted or drowsy driver. In other instances, such as periods of inclement weather, drivers can choose to stay off of the road due to the conditions.

Unfortunately, the weather can change suddenly, and some people have to drive to work or take care of other responsibilities. Visibility can deteriorate for different reasons, and it is vital to understand the prevalence and impact of accidents that take place during low visibility.

Data on poor visibility and traffic collisions

According to statistics published by the Federal Highway Administration, over 16,300 people sustain injuries in fog-related traffic accidents on an annual basis. In fact, fog plays a role in more than 38,700 vehicle accidents every year, resulting in the loss of more than 600 lives.

In addition to fog, other risk factors can affect visibility. Wind-blown dust, smoke and snow can reduce visibility. Furthermore, heavy precipitation can prevent drivers from seeing clearly.

Negligent driving during poor visibility

Driving when visibility is poor raises a number of concerns, whether you cannot see hazards on the road, other vehicles, bicyclists or pedestrians. Sadly, some people drive recklessly when visibility deteriorates, such as drivers who speed around turns, fail to yield, ignore traffic signs or get behind the wheel while intoxicated.

Those responsible for causing an accident during poor visibility due to their negligence must face consequences, especially if the crash caused injuries or deaths.
