It is no secret that across the United States and here in Kentucky thousands of people are victims of drunk drivers every year. A lot of law enforcement time and treasure is put into ensuring that our roadways are a safe place to be. However, it is important for motorists like yourself to keep your eyes and senses open for persons who may be driving under the influence. While it is imperative that you do not take the law into your own hands, vigilance can help save lives. According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, there are several recognizable signs that a fellow motorist on the road might be driving while impaired.

Many of the most salient signs involve driving erratically. This may involve the motorist quickly accelerating or decelerating at random. Tailgating may also be a serious problem if somebody is driving drunk, and you may even notice that the person in question is leaning up close to the windshield due to impaired vision.

Drunk drivers often tend to swerve in and out of lanes and drift across the road. Additionally, many drunk drivers are aware that they are drunk and are trying to “play it safe,” so they may actually be driving slower than the posted speed with no apparent reason for doing so.

If you believe that a fellow driver on the road is driving under the influence, it is important to maintain distance to assure your safety. If you can get any identifying characteristics of the car, this is helpful. Then, pull off to the side of the road and call 911.
