Tips for safe bicycling this summer

With warmer temperatures here to stay over the next few months in Kentucky, there's a good chance you'll spend a lot of time outdoors. For many, the spring and summer seasons are a great time for bicycling.

It doesn't matter if you're commuting on your bicycle or simply riding for pleasure, here are some tips you can follow to maintain your safety:

  • Follow the rules of the road: Just the same as motorists, you're responsible for following the rules of the road. From traffic signals to stop signs, you're not above these laws.
  • Beware of opening doors: A motor vehicle driver or passenger may neglect to peek in their mirror before opening their door. If they do so into your lane of travel, you could strike the door head on.
  • Pedestrians are dangerous, too: Many bicyclists focus so much attention on moving vehicles that they overlook the dangers of pedestrians. For instance, if someone who is jogging passes in front of you without warning, it could result in a serious collision.
  • Use bicycle lanes when available: You won't always have access to a bicycle lane, but when you do, it's imperative to ride here. It's safer than spending time on the street or the sidewalk. This may be the safest place to ride, but it doesn't make you immune to an accident.
  • Use body language to your advantage: If you're making a turn, use the appropriate signal to alert other cyclists and drivers. If you're crossing the street, make eye contact with any drivers waiting for you.

Since there's no fullproof way to prevent an accident, make sure you wear the appropriate safety gear at all times. At the very least, always wear a helmet when riding your bike.

If you're injured in a car-bicycle accident, move to safety if you're able to do so. Then, call 911 and wait for paramedics to arrive.

After receiving treatment at a local hospital, you can review the cause of the accident and collect evidence that shows that the other party was negligent. This will put you on the right path to protecting your legal rights and receiving compensation for your injuries and related damages.
