On Behalf of | Apr 18, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents |

Even though law enforcement agencies take drunk driving seriously, too many motorists continue to drive under the influence of alcohol. When they do, innocent individuals often pay the price. In fact, according to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, 926 people suffer injuries every day because of drunk drivers.

While any motor vehicle accident is stressful, a collision with an intoxicated driver is likely to be even worse. After all, alcohol can make a person behave unpredictably and aggressively. So, what should you do if a drunk driver hits you?

Call 911

As you know, drunk driving is a crime. Therefore, you should immediately dial 911 to report the car accident. When officers arrive, you can expect them to detain the intoxicated driver and write a report.

Remain calm

The drunk driver that hits your vehicle might not act reasonably or responsibly. To keep from triggering the driver, it is important to remain calm until officers appear on the scene. If the driver shows signs of aggression, though, you should keep a safe distance from him or her.

Go to the hospital

It is important to remember that car accident injuries might not show up immediately. That is, it might take hours or even days for you to realize you have suffered an injury. As a result, it is imperative for you to go to the emergency room for a full medical evaluation.

Drunk drivers are legally responsible for the injuries and other damages they cause. Ultimately, even though you can do little about the stressful nature of a drunk driving accident, you may be eligible for substantial financial compensation.
