Whiplash is a common injury of motor vehicle crashes in Kentucky. This injury does not always appear immediately after a rear-end collision but can have lasting effects for some. Following a crash, individuals should look for these symptoms and seek medical attention.

The Mayo Clinic can improve within a few weeks, but some conditions can last long after the accident. When a car hits another, the force of the movement causes the head to move back then forward in a forceful motion. The sudden movement can cause neck pain by damaging tissues, ligaments, nerves, bones and muscles.

There are treatment plans that can help most car crash victims recover from the injury. Common symptoms of this neck injury include fatigue, neck pain, arm numbness, shoulder pain, dizziness and headaches. Whiplash can also cause irritability, depression, blurred vision, memory problems and ear ringing.

Healthline discusses the complications of whiplash. The damage caused to the neck ligaments, joints and discs can cause chronic pain following an accident. Some victims experience headaches for years after the damage initially happened.

While there are potential long-term complications, most people experience a full recovery in about 90 days. Some patients have benefited from alternative treatments including acupuncture, chiropractic care, electronic nerve stimulation and massage. A neck collar and pain medications can also help aid recovery.

A doctor diagnosis the condition using a physical exam, x-rays or other advanced imaging. The more extensive imagery can help especially those who suffer from a traumatic brain injury in addition to the suspected whiplash. Be sure to see a doctor if there is severe pain, limb weakness, numbness, tingling or pain or bladder issues.
