What do I do if I see a drunk driver?

It is important to stay safe while you are on Kentucky roads. While most drivers are considerate of others, an unfortunate reality of being behind the wheel is that occasionally you may come across individuals who are operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. If you come across a drunk or otherwise impaired driver on the roads, it is important to take action to protect yourself and others.

According to MADD, there are many signs that a driver could be impaired. For instance, if you see a car that is weaving erratically, tailgating, swerving into the opposite lane of traffic, or even driving too slow, these could all indicate an impaired driver.

If you see a driver that you suspect is under the influence, the first thing to do is to stay far away from the driver’s car. Do not try to pass the impaired driver or otherwise get his or her attention, as this will greatly increase the risk of a crash.

Next, try to get the license plate number of the impaired driver. Also try to get information about the model, make, color, or any other distinguishing features of the impaired driver’s car. However, do not put yourself in danger while trying to do this.

Once you have any distinguishing information about the car, then call 911. Make sure to relay any information that you have about the car, and also give information about your location and where you suspect the driver is headed. This will allow law enforcement to quickly locate the impaired driver and ensure that he or she is taken off the road.
